How can we upskill Gen Z as fast as we train AI?

Co-authored by Marcie Merriman, EY Managing Director in partnership with Microsoft and TeachAI, this global study of more than 5,000 Gen Z respondents across 15 countries explores how young people use, understand and feel about AI. It identifies critical gaps in AI literacy and examines what businesses, educators and policymakers must do to prepare Gen Z for an AI-powered future.

Emerging technologies have reshaped human behavior and transformed societies throughout history, from the invention of the wheel to the rise of the internet. Over and over, new technologies have altered how people live, work and play.

Just as internet connectivity forever changed the world of work for Gen X, and Millennials were the early pioneers of social media, today's younger generations stand to drive the mass adoption of AI at work and by our societies at large.

Understanding how Gen Z engages with AI and their attitudes toward it may determine how fast they get there, and ultimately may make or break your organization’s ability to transform and keep pace in the AI-powered era.

Future business success requires an understanding how Gen Z perceives and utilizes this evolving technology today.

To assess where we are and where we need to go next, EY gathered a team of experts and conducted primary research across the to explore:
1. How does Gen Z use AI and with what level of literacy?
2. How does Gen Z think AI will impact their lives?
3. What AI skills does Gen Z feel they need most?
4. And what’s next for Gen Z, educators, employers, governments, policymakers and NGOs responsible for creating an environment where everyone can benefit from AI?
